Ms. Emilline Law Kwang is a Disability Rights Advocate. Having a disability has been a driving force throughout her life. She did a Bachelor's of Laws at the University of Mauritius. She joined the Public Service in 2016 and received an Australia Awards Scholarship to study a Master in Public Policy at the University of Monash in 2020. She is currently working at the Public Sector Business Transformation Bureau where she has been appointed as Secretary of a Multidisciplinary Team for the Audit and Review of Institutions dealing with Gender-Based Violence.
Ms Hélène de Cazanove, is a passionate woman, with an hearing disability, for the cause of an inclusive society. She cares, and fights for the recognition of persons with disabilities 'welfare and their empowerment in all aspects of life. She has a diploma in education in the disability field and a bachelor degree in Early childhood education and care. She has 22 years of experience in the Disability field.
Ms. Nalini Ramasamy Since sustaining a spinal cord injury in 1992, Nalini Ramasamy has been an influential advocate in the disability sector. She joined La Fraternité Mauricienne des Malades et Handicapés in 1998, founded the Women with Disabilities Forum in 2012, and extended her advocacy by joining the Federation Voice of Disabled People International in 2016. Her efforts have significantly contributed to disability rights and empowerment.
Mr. Jean François Favory, who became paraplegic at age 7 due to a medical error, has overcome numerous challenges. Despite his condition, he completed his education and has been working for 18 years, including roles in graphic design, computer maintenance, and management positions in a call center and a bank. Now devoted to volunteer work, he focuses on advocating for the rights and independence of people with disabilities. A celebrated wheelchair basketball player and recipient of the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship, Jean-François currently works with Non-profit Dis-Moi (Droits Humains Océan Indien) as a program manager, leading efforts to empower physically disabled individuals in their autonomy and participation in society.
Me. Anishta Roochan is a practicing barrister and was called to the Mauritian bar in January 2018. She worked at the Chambers of Mr. G. Bhanji Soni and at Étude Guy Rivalland, prior to joining LAWLINE in September 2021.
Anishta is a member of the UK Honourable Society of Middle Temple. Anishta has also volunteered in the past in with several NGOs on various social projects and youth empowerment projects.
Mr. Ali Jookhun, OSK, has been a prominent figure in advocating for disability rights and awareness since 1993. His dedication was honored with the Commonwealth's 83rd Points of Light Award from Her Majesty the Queen, recognizing his service to persons with disabilities. He served as the Chairperson of the African Down Syndrome Network from 2022 to 2024 and was the Chairperson of the Training and Employment of Disabled Persons Board (TEDPB) from 2004 to 2005. Additionally, he is a founding member of U-LINK and the Down Syndrome Association, further highlighting his commitment to the cause.
Ms. Pooja Gopee, Project Head of Inclusion (Mauritius) and President of Voice of Disabled People International, is a dedicated advocate for disability rights and inclusive policy-making globally, in partnership with Inclusion Africa and Inclusion International. Her personal experience with a family member with speech and hearing impairment inspired her early research in self-advocacy and independent living. Pooja holds a BSc in Political Science with a specialization in International Relations and a Master’s in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Mauritius. She is also pursuing a specialized short course in "Social Protection and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities" at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Science, collaborating with UNICEF, the International Labour Organization, and the Centre for Inclusive Policy.
Mr. Soovan Sharma Dookhoo is an executive member of the commonwealth. Author of True love Mindful Myth. From Past President Rotaract Club of Riviere du Rempart year 2019 – 2020. rowing professional with a Bachelor of Science Management Business Informatics and Masters degree,Soovan is a disability rights activist and researcher for accessibility and inclusion.
As a Project Coordinator at the Global Rainbow Foundation specialising in Disability Empowerment, Aisha has dedicated many years to advocating for the rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. She orchestrates and implements impactful programs aimed at bridging the gap between persons with disabilities and the workforce, ensuring their integration and successful job retention. Aisha's expertise lies in navigating the complexities of disability employment, from delivering adapted training to students with disabilities, collaborating with HR teams to create more inclusions and diversity by supporting reasonable accommodations, to spearheading innovative initiatives for facilitation of social integration of all individuals with disabilities. Aisha is a fervent advocate for creating inclusive cultures, creating awareness through workshops to multiple companies and dedicated in finding solutions to compensate for all the lack of basic rights of persons with disabilities in Mauritius.
